Overview

Gedeon GRC Consulting provided professional structural engineering services for facade, roof and trim repair at historic Skylands Manor in Central New Jersey’s Ringwood State Park. The manor and its surrounding 96 acres are part of the NJ Green Acres program and serve as the State’s official botanical garden, open to the public. The Tudor-style mansion — built in approximately the 1920s — is a large stone building consisting of a main house and a two-story catering wing, with a steeply pitched slate roof with dormers and flat roofs of rubber roofing material. This historic preservation/restoration project involves the replacement of the flat rubber roofing system and the repair of deteriorated exterior trim.

Scope of services

As part of the overall design team, Gedeon GRC was primarily responsible for the structural investigation and design related to the facade and roof repairs, including preparation of construction documents. The team performed a structural evaluation of the exterior facade utilizing probes and prepared a report with observations, recommended repairs and repair details. Other components involved coordination with the design team and state agencies including NJDPMC, and compliance with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Restoration of Historic Places.

Construction administration

Gedeon GRC also provided construction administration services, including review of shop drawings and RFIs, assessment of unanticipated field conditions, and periodic site visits.
