Overview
Gedeon GRC Consulting provided preliminary design services — Phases I–IV — for the replacement of the CR 19 bridge over I-495 (the Long Island Expressway) in the Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County, NY. The replacement enables the region to construct critical bridge improvements that eliminate deficiencies and strengthen the surrounding infrastructure. The existing structure is a four-span, multi-steel 12-girder bridge with a condition rating of 4.063 (on a scale of 1 to 7) per the 2008 Biennial Inspection Report — at the time, the lowest rating in the region.
Scope of services
The project scope involved a traffic analysis of existing conditions and recommended methods for determining the need for repair versus replacement of the bridge deck and superstructure. Bridge work included structural assessment, fatigue analysis, design for steel and concrete repair, continuity retrofit, bearings, retaining wall design, railings, lighting upgrade, asbestos removal, MPT design and other related tasks — along with agency coordination and public outreach.
