Overview

Gedeon GRC Consulting provided resident engineering inspection services in connection with the design-build rehabilitation of the St. George Staten Island Ferry Terminal ramps. The project consisted of the rehabilitation of eight ramps; demolition and reconstruction of the North Ramp access to the parking lots and Richmond County Bank Ballpark; architectural improvements to the bus gates and canopies; improvements to pedestrian access; and creation of a bikeway and parking facility for cyclists. The scope also included refurbishing the flute sculpture, painting all structures, installing new drainage and paving the North Municipal Parking Lot.

Project elements

Cleaning and painting of steel columns, framing and exposed steel, with concrete patching as needed
Repair of the spalled abutment breast wall, bridge seat and pedestals
Removal of the existing superstructure and replacement with a new structure
Removal of encasement from bottom flanges of pedestrian ramps and concrete encasement from columns and steel framing
Replacement of all fascia and selective interior stringer connection angles
Replacement of steel railing with concrete barrier, and steel bearings at both abutments with elastomeric bearings
Replacement of the deck drainage system, concrete deck and asphalt overlay with a single-course deck
Replacement of existing deck joints, deck sealing and sidewalk construction on both sides of the bridge
Repair of the approach sidewalk and masonry wall
Construction of a new ramp parallel to Richmond County Stadium and demolition of the existing ramp
Replacement of bus waiting-area islands and kiosks
Re-inspection and repair of exposed steel columns and framing; roof replacement and elimination of the stairs to Ramp B and the sidewalk below
Installation of pigeon deterrent systems and miscellaneous steel repair, with structural framing modified or repaired as needed

Delivery conditions

Construction activities were carried out day and night at several locations simultaneously, with certain tasks performed on nights and weekends due to railroad restrictions. The contract also involved Maintenance of Traffic, training, agency coordination, and record-keeping in accordance with the Manual for Uniform Record Keeping (MURK).
